Oxidized Bitumen: Overview

Oxidized Bitumen, also known as Blown Bitumen, is a specially treated form of bitumen produced by blowing air through penetration-grade bitumen at elevated temperatures. This process modifies the bitumen’s physical properties, making it harder, more temperature-resistant, and suitable for industrial applications rather than paving. Oxidized Bitumen is solid or semi-solid at ambient temperatures and has a higher softening point and lower penetration value than standard grades.

It is primarily used in water-proofing, roofing, pipe coating, electrical insulation, and various industrial processes where thermal stability and durability are critical. It is not typically used for road construction but excels in projects demanding superior resistance to heat, aging, and oxidation.

Important Features of Oxidized Bitumen

Air-Blown Technology

By blowing air through hot bitumen, the molecular structure changes, increasing asphaltene content and resulting in a rubbery and highly stable material. This enhances resistance to flow, oxidation, and deformation under high temperatures.

Standardized Grade

Oxidized Bitumen is classified based on its softening point (°C) and penetration value (dmm). Common grades include 85/25, 90/15, 95/25, and 115/15, where the first number indicates softening point and the second the penetration value. Standards include ASTM D36 (Softening Point) and ASTM D5 (Penetration Test).

Wide Application Scope

Used extensively in waterproofing roofs, sealing foundations, corrosion protection of pipelines, cable coating, sound damping, and industrial mastics. Its ability to retain shape and performance under high temperatures makes it indispensable in many manufacturing sectors.

Thermal and Structural Stability

The penetration class bitumen provides continuous performance under separate load and temperature conditions. Its proven flexibility, adhesion to the set and resistance to deformation means that it goes to materials for long -lasting asphalt sidewalks.

Customizable Properties

Depending on the intended industrial use, oxidized bitumen can be tailored to specific softening points and hardness levels. This makes it a versatile material for custom-engineered applications.

Safety Measures During Handling and Transport

Storage Safety: Store in dry, cool, well-ventilated environments. Avoid contact with moisture, which may cause splattering when heated. Keep containers tightly sealed.
Proper Labeling and PPE Use: All packages must be clearly labeled. Workers should wear heat-resistant gloves, goggles, and long-sleeved protective clothing when handling molten oxidized bitumen.
Transport Guidelines: Transport in solid blocks, drums, or heated tankers as per industrial norms. Ensure that material safety data sheets (MSDS) accompany all shipments.
Fire and Heat Safety: While less flammable than cutbacks, oxidized bitumen must still be kept away from open flames during heating. Overheating may cause fumes or degradation.
Environmental Precautions: Avoid uncontrolled discharge into soil or water. Spills should be contained with absorbent materials and disposed of in accordance with local regulations.

Choosing the Right Oxidized Bitumen Grade

Selecting the correct grade of oxidized bitumen depends on operational temperature range, expected load, and application method. Key considerations include:

Softening Point & Penetration: Higher softening points are suited for hotter environments or load-bearing surfaces. Lower penetration values indicate harder material for durable, rigid applications.
Application Environment: For roofing and waterproofing, grades like 85/25 or 90/15 are popular. For industrial coating or insulation, higher grades like 115/15 offer better thermal endurance.
Processing Conditions: Ensure compatibility with heating equipment and application surfaces for maximum adhesion and effectiveness.
