What is bitumen 80/100?
Bitumen 80/100 is a penetration grade bitumen with a needle penetration value between 80 and 100 (measured in units of 0.1 mm) at 25°C under a 100g load for 5 seconds per ASTM D5. The penetration value directly indicates the consistency and hardness of the bitumen — a higher number means a softer, more pliable material. As a result, Bitumen 80/100 sits at the softer end of the paving grade spectrum, making it especially well-suited for road construction in moderate to cool climates where flexibility and crack resistance are priorities.
Classified under ASTM D946 and AASHTO M20, this grade is produced through the vacuum distillation of crude oil. The resulting material is a dark brown-to-black, semi-solid thermoplastic substance that softens when heated and hardens when cooled. Its thermoplastic behaviour makes it highly workable during application and reliably stable once in service.
Black Rock Bitumen supplies Penetration Grade Bitumen 80/100 sourced from quality-controlled refineries, inspected by independent third parties, and shipped in new steel drums, jumbo bags, or bulk containers to destinations across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the GCC.
Key properties & technical characteristics
Bitumen 80/100 delivers a precise balance of softness, adhesion, and durability. Its softening point of 42–50°C (per ASTM D36) means it begins to flow at moderate temperatures, which is ideal for blending into hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and achieving uniform coating of aggregates. Its ductility value of 100 cm minimum (ASTM D113) reflects exceptional elasticity — the material can stretch significantly before failing, which resists cracking under thermal cycling and traffic stress.
With a flash point above 250°C (ASTM D92), it is safe for high-temperature mixing operations. Solubility in trichloroethylene of 99% minimum confirms a high degree of purity and minimal inert content. These properties together make 80/100 one of the most reliable paving grade bitumens for projects demanding long-term pavement performance.
Due to its higher viscosity compared to softer grades, bitumen 80/100 enables a thinner pavement design — industry data indicates up to a 30% reduction in asphalt volume applied without compromising structural performance.

Applications & use cases
The primary application of Bitumen 80/100 is in the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA) for base courses and wearing courses. Its combination of flexibility, adhesion, and load-bearing performance makes it effective across a wide range of infrastructure applications:
Road Construction
Base and wearing course binder for highways, national roads, and urban streets in moderate-to-cool climates.
Flexible Pavement
Used in flexible pavement design where traffic-induced deflection must be absorbed without surface cracking.
Waterproofing
Applied in roofing systems, foundation waterproofing, & drainage structures owing to its impermeable surface film.
Airport Runways
Suitable for light-load aprons and taxiways in cooler environments requiring fatigue resistance.
Bitumen Emulsion Base
Commonly used as a feedstock for manufacturing cationic and anionic bitumen emulsions.
Industrial Coatings
Applied as a protective bituminous coating on pipelines, steel structures, and underground installations.
Bitumen 80/100 vs bitumen 60/70 — which grade to choose?
Bitumen 60/70 and 80/100 are the two most widely traded penetration grades globally. Choosing between them depends primarily on climate, traffic load, and pavement design requirements.
