    What is Bitumen 85/40?

Bitumen 85/40 is a specialised oxidized bitumen grade combining the high thermal resistance of the 85-series softening point (85–95°C) with the highest penetration value in the 85-series range (35–45 dmm).

This higher penetration compared to 85/25 and 85/35 makes Bitumen 85/40 one of the most flexible grades within the hard bitumen family, enabling its use in applications where significant movement accommodation, elastic recovery, and cold-temperature performance are required alongside heat resistance.

Primary applications include joint sealants for concrete pavements and bridge expansion joints, flexible waterproofing coatings for structures subject to thermal or seismic movement, and as a base bitumen for highly-polymer-modified membranes requiring enhanced low-temperature flexibility. Our UAE supply chain provides consistent, standards-compliant Bitumen 85/40 for customers across the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and Europe.

    Applications of Bitumen 85/40

Road and airfield pavement expansion joint sealant (hot-pour)
Bridge deck expansion joint sealant and movement accommodation layer
Flexible waterproofing membrane for structures subject to thermal or dynamic movement
Base bitumen for high-content SBS elastomeric modified membranes

    Advantages of Bitumen 85/40

Suitable for application on live pipelines operating at surface temperatures up to 80°C

    High Heat Stability

High softening point (85–95°C) for heat stability, matching the 85/25 and 85/35 grades in thermal performance

    Maximum Flexibility

Highest penetration in the 85-series (35–45 dmm) — the softest and most flexible within the 85°C SP family

    Crack & Movement Resistance

Excellent accommodation of joint movement, substrate cracking, and thermal cycling in sealant applications

    All-Climate Performance

Good cold-temperature flexibility — suitable for use in temperate and variable-climate markets

    Strong Surface Adhesion

Strong adhesion to concrete, asphalt, masonry, and metal substrates

    Polymer-Ready Base

Good elastic recovery properties when used as a base for polymer-modification

      Frequently Asked Questions.

Oxidized Bitumen Grade 85/40 delivers high softening point, strong durability, and reliable waterproofing for roofing, coatings, insulation, and industrial applications.

Primarily for pavement and bridge expansion joint sealants, flexible waterproofing coatings on structures subject to movement, and as a base bitumen for high-modifier SBS membranes.

How does 85/40 differ from 85/25 and 85/35?

The penetration is highest in the 85-series at 35–45 dmm, making it the most flexible grade in this softening point family. It retains the same 85–95°C softening point but offers better cold-temperature performance and movement accommodation.

Yes. Bitumen 85/40 meets the penetration and softening point requirements for hot-poured bituminous joint sealants per ASTM D3405 and related specifications.

Yes. The combination of heat resistance (85°C SP) and higher flexibility (35–45 dmm penetration) makes it well-suited for waterproofing structures with thermal, seismic, or settlement-induced movement.

SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) is the most commonly used modifier. The higher base penetration of 85/40 allows for higher SBS loading without the extreme viscosity increase seen with lower-penetration grades.

Hot-pour joint sealants are typically applied at 175–195°C. The material should flow freely into the joint and self-level before cooling.

Yes. We supply to road contractors, civil engineering firms, and pavement maintenance companies globally.

ASTM D312, BS EN 13304, ASTM D3405 (joint sealant), and internal specifications benchmarked against leading international road authority requirements.

Yes. An up-to-date SDS/MSDS is available in English and can be provided in other languages on request.

Minimum 12–18 months in sealed original packaging stored in a cool, dry, shaded location.
