Cutback RC 3000 — High Viscosity Bitumen for Spray Sealing & High-Stress Road Maintenance

Formulated with very high viscosity for exceptional adhesion and thick binder films, RC-3000 delivers long-lasting performance in spray sealing and high-stress road maintenance works.

What Is Cutback RC-3000 Bitumen?

Cutback RC-3000 is a rapid-curing bitumen made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a volatile petroleum solvent, making it the heaviest and most viscous grade in the RC series. Despite this thickness, it still cures rapidly once the solvent evaporates, forming an exceptionally thick and durable binder film.

A kinematic viscosity of 3000–8000 mm²/s at 60°C, along with a much higher flash point of 85°C, allows RC-3000 to be handled safely at this heavier consistency while still bonding strongly to aggregates. Its residue penetration range of 120–250 reflects a softer, more resilient binder suited to demanding conditions.

RC-3000 is typically supplied to ASTM D2170 standards, with a negative spot test confirming solvent compatibility. It’s the grade of choice for heavy-duty spray sealing, industrial roads, and airfield pavements where maximum binder thickness and adhesion under severe traffic or climate stress are required.

Our RC-3000 bitumen is a very high-viscosity rapid-curing cutback grade engineered for maximum binder strength and heavy-duty road surfacing applications.

RC-3000 is a rapid-curing cutback bitumen with very high viscosity, made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with volatile petroleum solvents. It cures quickly on exposure to air while still forming a thick, high-strength binder film — making it one of the heaviest grades in the RC (rapid-curing) cutback series

What does "RC-3000" mean in bitumen grading?

The "RC" stands for Rapid Curing, and "3000" refers to the minimum kinematic viscosity (in mm²/s at 60°C) that defines the grade — in this case a range of 3000–8000 mm²/s under ASTM D2170. Higher numbers in the RC series mean higher viscosity and slower, thicker application.

? RC-3000 is used primarily for heavy-duty spray sealing, high-traffic and high-temperature pavements, industrial roads, and airfield surfacing. It's chosen specifically where the job needs a thick binder film and strong aggregate adhesion under severe service conditions.

RC-3000 has significantly higher viscosity than RC-800, which translates into a thicker binder film, stronger adhesion, and greater durability under heavy traffic or extreme climates. RC-800 is better suited to lighter, standard-duty sealing work, while RC-3000 is reserved for more demanding applications

Under ASTM standards, RC-3000 has a kinematic viscosity of 3000–8000 mm²/s at 60°C (ASTM D2170), a minimum flash point of 85°C (ASTM D3143), and penetration of residue between 120–250 (0.1 mm) at 25°C (ASTM D402). Ductility of residue is a minimum of 99 cm, and the spot test result is negative, confirming compatibility and non-reactivity with the base bitumen.

Despite its very high viscosity, RC-3000 is formulated to cure rapidly once the volatile solvents evaporate after application. This rapid-curing behavior is what separates the RC series from medium-curing (MC) and slow-curing (SC) cutback grades, which are designed to retain solvent — and workability — for longer.

RC-3000 offers extremely strong aggregate bonding, a thick and durable binder film, rapid curing despite its high viscosity, and reliable performance under severe traffic and climate conditions. These properties make it a preferred choice for contractors working on high-stress road maintenance rather than routine resurfacing.

RC-3000 should be stored in sealed tanks or drums, kept away from heat and ignition sources, and handled in well-ventilated areas because of its solvent content. Standard hydrocarbon-handling precautions apply, and full guidance is provided in the product's Safety Data Sheet.
