The basics

What is viscosity grade bitumen?

A petroleum binder classified by absolute viscosity at 60°C under IS 73:2013, rather than by needle penetration. It is the dominant system in India and increasingly used across South Asia and parts of Africa.

Penetration grading measures hardness at 25°C. Viscosity grading measures flow resistance at 60°C and 135°C, which predicts road performance more reliably and is required on most Indian government tenders.

The number in VG 10 to VG 40 is the minimum absolute viscosity at 60°C: VG 10 is 800 poises, the softest, and VG 40 is 3,200 poises, the stiffest.

How it is tested

Flow resistance is measured at 60°C and 135°C with a vacuum or rotational viscometer, in poises, under the IS 1206 method within IS 73:2013.
