What Is PG 82-28 Performance Grade Bitumen?
PG 82-28 is a Superpave-graded bitumen built to endure some of the widest thermal extremes in pavement engineering, resisting rutting at pavement temperatures up to 82°C while resisting thermal cracking down to -28°C. This span demands substantial polymer modification to keep the binder stable at both ends.
It’s specified for critical infrastructure — major highways, mountain passes, and freight corridors — in continental climates where summer pavement surfaces run extremely hot and winters bring severe, sustained cold. The elastomeric modification improves recovery from heavy axle loading while resisting low-temperature fatigue cracking.
Graded under AASHTO M320 / ASTM D6373, PG 82-28 is specified when a project’s climate and traffic data both point to extreme, non-negotiable performance demands.
