The basics

What is polymer modified bitumen?

Conventional bitumen enhanced with polymers such as SBS to improve its elastic and thermal properties, so it resists deformation, cracking and temperature stress.

The polymers let the binder stretch under load and recover, which suits heavy traffic, temperature extremes and repeated stress.

Grades are specified by softening point, elastic recovery and penetration, with references to IS 15462 and ASTM D6114. Crumb rubber modified binders blend bitumen with recycled rubber for flexibility and cracking resistance.
