Cutback RC 250 — High-Viscosity Rapid-Curing Bitumen for Road Construction

Engineered with higher viscosity for strong adhesion, RC-250 delivers durable surface treatments built for demanding road construction and maintenance works.

What Is Cutback RC-250 Bitumen?

Cutback RC-250 is a rapid-curing bitumen made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a volatile petroleum solvent, giving it a notably higher viscosity than the RC-30 and RC-70 grades. The slower solvent evaporation improves binder retention and film thickness while still curing fast enough for road work.

A kinematic viscosity of 250–500 mm²/s at 60°C, paired with a flash point above 27°C, allows RC-250 to be handled and sprayed safely while forming a thicker, more durable binder film on the aggregate. Once cured, it delivers stronger adhesion than the lighter RC grades.

RC-250 is typically supplied to ASTM D2170 standards, with residue penetration between 80–120 and a negative spot test confirming solvent compatibility. This makes it well suited to surface dressing, tack coats, and road maintenance or rehabilitation work on medium to high-traffic pavements.

    Frequently Asked Questions.

Our RC-250 bitumen is a rapid-curing cutback formulated to provide enhanced binder strength and controlled curing, making it suitable for spray sealing, surface dressing, and heavy-duty road applications.

RC-250 is a rapid-curing cutback bitumen produced by blending penetration-grade bitumen with volatile solvents to achieve higher viscosity and fast curing for demanding road applications.

    What is RC-250 used for?

RC-250 is commonly used for surface dressing and spray seals, tack coats, road maintenance and rehabilitation works, and medium to high-traffic pavements.

Per ASTM D2170, RC-250 has a kinematic viscosity at 60°C of 250–500 mm²/s, significantly higher than RC-70, giving it a thicker binder film for stronger bonding.

RC-250 has a higher viscosity and slower solvent evaporation than RC-70, providing better binder retention and stronger aggregate bonding for heavier-duty applications.

RC-250 has a minimum flash point of 27°C (Tag Open-Cup, ASTM D3143), a key safety parameter for transport, storage, and application handling.

The penetration of RC-250's residue at 25°C ranges from 80 to 120 (in 0.1 mm units), tested per ASTM D402, indicating a durable binder suited to demanding road conditions.

Yes, RC-250 can be applied at ambient temperatures, offering strong adhesion and improved film thickness without requiring extensive heating.

Black Rock Bitumen supplies RC-250 in new steel drums or jumbo bags, with a production capacity of approximately 1,000 MT per month and FOB, CFR, or CIF delivery terms.
