What Is Cutback MC-30 Bitumen?
Cutback MC-30 is a medium-curing bitumen made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a less volatile petroleum solvent than the RC series, allowing it to cure at a slower, more controlled rate. This gives it time to penetrate deeper into granular and absorbent base layers before the solvent evaporates.
A kinematic viscosity of 30–60 mm²/s at 60°C, paired with a flash point of 38°C or higher, makes MC-30 safe to handle while still light enough to soak into base courses uniformly. Its residue penetration of 120–300 reflects a softer binder suited to priming rather than surface wear.
MC-30 is typically supplied to ASTM D2170 standards, with a negative spot test confirming solvent compatibility. It’s commonly used for prime coats on granular bases, soil stabilization, and pre-treatment of surfaces before asphalt laying.
