What Is Cutback RC-70 Bitumen?
Cutback RC-70 is a rapid-curing bitumen made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a volatile petroleum solvent, giving it a medium viscosity that sits just above the RC-30 grade. This slightly slower evaporation rate improves binder retention while still curing quickly enough for time-sensitive surface work.
A kinematic viscosity of 70–140 mm²/s at 60°C allows RC-70 to be sprayed or applied at ambient temperatures while still bonding strongly to aggregates. Once the solvent evaporates, the residual bitumen forms a firm, durable film suited to surface dressing and tack coat work.
RC-70 is typically supplied to ASTM D2170 standards, with residue penetration between 80–120 and a negative spot test confirming solvent compatibility. This makes it a common choice for surface treatments, tack coats, and medium-traffic pavement maintenance where stronger adhesion is needed than RC-30 provides.
