Cutback RC 30 — Rapid-Curing Bitumen for Prime Coats & Road Construction

Engineered with a fast-evaporating solvent blend for rapid penetration and quick curing, RC-30 delivers reliable bonding for prime coats, tack coats, and time-sensitive road construction projects

What Is Cutback RC-30 Bitumen?

Cutback RC-30 is a rapid-curing bitumen produced by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a volatile petroleum solvent, giving it a low viscosity and fast evaporation rate. This makes it one of the lightest grades in the rapid-curing series, designed to flow easily at ambient temperatures without heating.

A kinematic viscosity of 30–60 mm²/s at 60°C keeps RC-30 thin enough to penetrate granular surfaces quickly. As the solvent evaporates, the residual bitumen hardens rapidly, forming a durable bond suited to prime coats and dust suppression work.

RC-30 is typically supplied to ASTM D2170 standards, with residue penetration held between 80–120 and a negative spot test confirming solvent compatibility. This makes it a preferred choice for temporary road works and fast-track applications where quick curing is essential.

    Frequently Asked Questions.

RC-30 is a rapid-curing cutback bitumen with low viscosity, formulated for prime coats and surface treatments where quick penetration and fast curing are required.

RC-30 is a rapid-curing cutback bitumen made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a volatile petroleum solvent, resulting in low viscosity and fast curing for road construction applications.

    What is RC-30 used for?

RC-30 is primarily used for prime coats on granular bases, surface treatments, temporary road works, and dust suppression on unpaved or semi-paved surfaces

Per ASTM D2170, RC-30 has a kinematic viscosity at 60°C of 30–60 mm²/s, making it one of the lowest-viscosity grades in the rapid-curing cutback series.

RC-30 contains a higher proportion of volatile solvent relative to bitumen, so the solvent evaporates quickly, leaving the bituminous residue to bond and harden faster than heavier grades like RC-250 or RC-800.

The penetration of RC-30's residue at 25°C ranges from 80 to 120 (in 0.1 mm units), tested per ASTM D402, indicating a relatively soft, workable binder after curing.

RC-30 can be applied at ambient temperatures due to its low viscosity, making it practical for prime coat work without heavy heating requirements, though performance can vary with site conditions

Black Rock Bitumen supplies RC-30 in new steel drums or jumbo bags, with a production capacity of approximately 1,000 MT per month and FOB, CFR, or CIF delivery terms.

RC-30 should be stored in airtight containers away from heat and ignition sources, with adequate ventilation during handling due to its volatile solvent content.
