What Is Cutback SC-250 Bitumen?
Cutback SC-250 is a slow-curing bitumen made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with low-volatility solvents, giving it a notably higher viscosity than SC-30 and SC-70. This slower, more controlled curing improves binder retention and produces a stronger bond once the solvent has fully evaporated.
A kinematic viscosity of 250–500 mm²/s at 60°C, with a flash point of 60°C or higher, allows SC-250 to be handled safely while depositing a thicker, more durable binder film than the lighter SC grades. Its higher viscosity residue reflects the improved strength and coating retention this grade delivers.
SC-250 is typically supplied to ASTM standards, with a negative spot test confirming solvent compatibility. It’s commonly used for prime coats on granular bases, surface treatments, soil stabilization, and low to medium-traffic road applications.
