    What is Bitumen 90/10?

Bitumen 90/10 is one of the hardest grades in the oxidized bitumen range, characterised by a very high softening point of 90–100°C and an ultra-low penetration of just 10–20 dmm.

This combination places the product firmly at the “hard end” of the industrial bitumen spectrum, making it ideal for applications where the highest possible resistance to heat deformation and mechanical abrasion is required.  With a softening point of 90–100°C, Bitumen 90/10 offers substantial performance margins above the maximum operating temperatures of most buried pipelines, refinery infrastructure, and petrochemical plant coatings.

Its ultra-low penetration produces a coating film of exceptional hardness, with minimal risk of sagging, dripping, or abrasive wear during pipeline installation by trenching or trenchless methods.

This grade is widely specified in GCC, MENA, and South Asian pipeline projects where aggressive soil chemistry, high ground temperatures, and demanding cathodic protection requirements converge.

    Applications of Bitumen 90/10

    Extreme Heat Resistance

Very high softening point (90–100°C) — one of the highest in the oxidized bitumen range for extreme thermal environments

    Ultra-Hard Surface Strength

Ultra-low penetration (10–20 dmm) produces an exceptionally hard, non-tacky coating film resistant to indentation and abrasion

    Superior Chemical Protection

Excellent chemical resistance to aggressive soils, groundwater, and dilute industrial chemicals

    Cathodic Disbonding Resistance

Strong resistance to cathodic disbonding for compatibility with active cathodic protection (CP) systems

    Advantages of Bitumen 90/10

Suitable for application on live pipelines operating at surface temperatures up to 80°C

    High-Temp Pipeline Coating

High-temperature buried steel pipeline external anti-corrosion coating (oil, gas, water)

    AWWA C203 Coating

Bituminous enamel coating to AWWA C203 for steel water transmission mains

    District Pipeline Coating

External coating for district cooling and district heating pipelines

    Petrochemical Protection

Protective coating for petrochemical plant structural steel and equipment bases

    Tank Exterior Coating

Anti-corrosion lining for above-ground steel storage tanks (external surfaces)

    Bridge Steel Protection

Protective coating for bridge beams and steel substructure elements in aggressive environments

      Frequently Asked Questions.

Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 is a hard, high softening point bitumen ideal for industrial insulation, roofing, and waterproofing applications.

Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 is an air-blown bitumen with high softening point and low penetration, offering excellent hardness and thermal stability.

What are the main applications of Bitumen 90/10?

It is commonly used in roofing membranes, industrial waterproofing, pipe coating, insulation boards, and corrosion protection systems.

The grade indicates a softening point of approximately 90°C and a penetration value of around 10 dmm, ensuring rigidity and durability.

Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 provides superior heat resistance, reduced flow at high temperatures, and improved aging performance.

Yes, its high softening point makes it ideal for hot climates and applications exposed to prolonged heat and direct sunlight.

It is primarily used for high-temperature buried pipeline anti-corrosion coating, bituminous enamel per AWWA C203, and heavy-duty protective coatings in petrochemical and industrial facilities.

The ultra-low penetration is intentional — it produces a very hard, dense coating film with maximum resistance to indentation, abrasion, and stone impingement during pipeline installation.

Yes. It meets the bitumen specification requirements of AWWA C203 for coal-tar protective coatings and linings on steel water pipelines, providing the required hardness and softening point.

Yes. With a 90–100°C softening point, it has a comfortable performance margin above 60–70°C operating temperatures.

Bitumen 90/10 exhibits excellent resistance to cathodic disbonding and is fully compatible with both sacrificial anode and impressed current CP systems per ASTM G8 and G42 test methods.
