Grade E-40 SBS Bitumen — Flexible Binder for Urban Roads & Moderate-Traffic Pavements

Grade E-40 is an SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) modified bitumen belonging to the Elastomeric Thermoplastic family, engineered to add flexibility, elasticity, and crack resistance to conventional bitumen. Its softening point of 55–70°C and penetration of 40–80 (0.1mm) place it as a moderate-stiffness, high-elasticity binder suited to varied climates.

A minimum elastic recovery of 50% at 25°C is what separates it from conventional penetration-grade binders — this is the property that lets the binder “spring back” after deformation instead of cracking or rutting. This makes E-40 the grade of choice where pavements see moderate traffic loads but still need year-round flexibility.

This classification — governed by ASTM D5, D36, and D6084 test methods — enables engineers and procurement teams to specify an exact elastomeric binder for urban roads, highways, and pavements needing a balance of durability and flexibility.
