    What Is Bitumen C240

Under AS 2008:1997, C240 is a Class 240 bitumen with a dynamic viscosity at 60°C of 200–300 Pa·s and a kinematic viscosity targeting 240 mm²/s. This places it between the soft C170 (100–200 Pa·s) and the stiffer C320 (280–380 Pa·s), making it ideally suited for the broadest range of Australian road conditions. C240 is broadly equivalent to 80/100 to 100/150 penetration grade bitumen in terms of hardness at 25°C. In the AASHTO system, it corresponds approximately to AC-10. However, the AS 2008 viscosity-based classification provides a more technically rigorous performance guarantee at actual pavement service temperatures, which is why Austroads mandates it for all Australian national highway projects rather than relying on penetration grading. C240 is also the standard base binder grade for many polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) grades used on premium Australian highways, including A10E and A20E modified binders for high-traffic wearing courses.

    Applications of Bitumen C240?

    Dense-graded asphalt concrete

Dense-graded asphalt concrete (DGAC) wearing and binder courses on state highways, urban arterials, and collector roads in temperate eastern Australian climates

    Open-graded asphalt

Open-graded asphalt (OGA) and stone mastic asphalt (SMA) surface courses on standard traffic roads, where C240 provides the right balance of drainage and structural performance

    Sprayed sealing

Sprayed sealing on primary and secondary sealed roads in temperate regions where C170 is considered too soft and C320 too stiff for the prevailing conditions

    Urban road

Urban road construction and rehabilitation in major cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth, where moderate temperatures and heavy urban traffic coexist

    Advantages of Bitumen C240 Bitumen

    versatile AS 2008 grade

single specification accepted across a wide range of road types, traffic volumes, and temperate climate conditions throughout Australia

    Higher softening point

Better rutting resistance on main roads while retaining adequate flexibility against fatigue cracking

    Standard base binder

Austroads-specified polymer-modified bitumens (A10E, A20E), enabling easy upgrade to PMB grades on the same supply contract

    Uniform Coating

Ensures consistent coverage and better performance.

Recognised by all Australian state road agencies

Widely recognised by all Australian state road agencies (TMC, VicRoads/MTIA, TfNSW, TMR, Main Roads WA), reducing specification approval burden for importers

      Frequently Asked Questions.

Australian Standard C240 bitumen is a hard paving grade with high viscosity and durability, ideal for heavy traffic roads and demanding infrastructure applications.

C240 is a high-viscosity paving bitumen manufactured to Australian Standards, commonly used for heavy-duty road construction and asphalt production.

Where is C240 bitumen commonly used?

C240 is ideal for highways, major roads, airport pavements, and high-traffic asphalt applications requiring strong load-bearing performance.

It offers excellent resistance to deformation, strong adhesion to aggregates, and durable performance under high temperatures and traffic loads.

Yes. Black Rock Bitumen supplies C240 that meets Australian Standard specifications, ensuring consistent quality and reliable field performance.

C240 is available in bulk, steel drums, and bitumen bags, with export-ready packaging suitable for domestic and international projects.

Yes. C240 is the standard base binder for producing Austroads A10E and A20E polymer-modified bitumens (PMBs) and other modified grades. SBS, EVA, and crumb rubber modifiers are blended with C240 to produce high-performance binders for premium highway applications.

Bitumen C240 has a softening point (Ring & Ball) of 39–47°C per AS 2008:1997, which is moderate — higher than C170 (more rutting resistance) but lower than C320 (more flexibility in cooler conditions).

C240 is stiffer (200–300 Pa·s vs 100–200 Pa·s), has a higher softening point (39–47°C vs 36–43°C), and is more suitable for general highway paving. C170 is softer, better for sprayed sealing and cold-climate applications. Most temperate-climate main roads in Australia specify C240, not C170.

Yes. Black Rock Bitumen exports AS 2008:1997-compliant C240 to Australian importers from Dubai in bulk heated tankers and 200 kg new steel drums. Full AS 2341 test certificates, COA, MSDS, and import clearance documentation are provided with every shipment.

Under AS 2008:1997, C240 must have a mass loss of ≤ 0.5% after RTFOT (Rolling Thin Film Oven Test, AS 2341.22 / ASTM D2872) and a RTFOT residue viscosity ratio of ≤ 3.0, ensuring the binder does not excessively harden during hot-mix plant production.
