What Is Cutback Bitumen?

Cutback bitumen is a refined bitumen product made by blending penetration grade bitumen with a volatile petroleum solvent — such as kerosene, naphtha, or diesel — to temporarily reduce its viscosity for easier application at ambient or lower temperatures.

The solvent type and proportion determine curing speed and classification: Rapid Curing (RC), Medium Curing (MC), and Slow Curing (SC), suited to various project timelines and conditions. As the solvent evaporates post-application, the bitumen reverts to an adhesive binder for aggregates.
