Penetration GradeS

Standards & Grades

Australian Standard bitumen is viscosity-graded, including C170, C320, and C450, designed for durability, temperature stability, and long-lasting road performance.

Bitumen-C170

Low-viscosity binder offering good workability, ideal for light-traffic roads and spray sealing applications.

Bitumen-C240

Moderately hard bitumen providing balanced flexibility and strength for standard road surfacing and urban pavements.

Bitumen-C320

Durable viscosity grade delivering excellent load resistance and performance for medium-traffic roads and highways.

Bitumen-C450

High-viscosity binder designed to withstand heavy traffic, high temperatures, and long-term pavement stress.

Bitumen-C600

Very firm bitumen engineered for extreme loads, industrial pavements, and roads exposed to intense traffic conditions.

    Frequently Asked Questions.

BlackRock Bitumen supplies Australian Standards bitumen worldwide, delivering consistent quality for global road construction projects.

C240 is a high-viscosity paving bitumen manufactured to Australian Standards, commonly used for heavy-duty road construction and asphalt production.

It offers excellent resistance to deformation, strong adhesion to aggregates, and durable performance under high temperatures and traffic loads.

Yes. C240 is the standard base binder for producing Austroads A10E and A20E polymer-modified bitumens (PMBs) and other modified grades. SBS, EVA, and crumb rubber modifiers are blended with C240 to produce high-performance binders for premium highway applications.

C320 is a high-viscosity paving bitumen manufactured to AS 2008:1997, with a dynamic viscosity at 60°C of 280–380 Pa·s, designed for heavy-duty road construction in warm and subtropical climates.

C320 has a softening point of 42–51°C, higher than C240 (39–47°C), which keeps the binder film viscous and stable at elevated pavement surface temperatures and reduces rutting risk.

C320 is stiffer (280–380 Pa·s vs 200–300 Pa·s) and has a higher softening point, making it the preferred choice for hot subtropical climates where C240 would soften and bleed under summer heat.

    C450 is a Class 450 bitumen under AS 2008:1997, with an original-binder viscosity at 60°C of 370–470 Pa·s and a softening point of 47–56°C — significantly stiffer than C320, built for hot-climate, heavy-traffic pavements.

Bitumen C600 is the stiffest of the five AS 2008:1997 classes, with a viscosity at 60°C of 500–600 Pa·s and penetration of 30–60 dmm at 25°C. It's used only where softer grades can't handle extreme heat or ultra-heavy traffic loads.
